My Vitamin D level

Da da da, drum roll, Jan 2009 81 nmols, March 2010 140 nmols!!!
Woo hoo!
Shows that supplementation does work. I'm going to stay on 5000 iu maintenance from now on.
All bloods were great, cholesterol down, blood fat down - no issues at all, perfectly healthy, until I stand up and start to wobble

Woo Hoo Helen, thats great
Woo Hoo Helen, thats great news!! How long did you have to supplement and what doses to get to that level, just out of interest?? I read that in jan 09 the level was 81nmol, so is that when you started 10,000 IU?
Cheers Kristy

Doses
Hi Kristy,
Most of that time was on 5000 iu, probably only the last two months I used the 10,000 iu pills which I got from the US. My 5000 pills also came from the US - very cheap.
As the cooler season is coming up Jelinkek reckons this is the time to have D levels measured because the opportunity to get natural sunshine will decrease over winter. He says that without supplementation at winter's end, just as spring hits with unsupplemented D levels at the lowest is the time when relapse is likely to occur. He's on the money, the research says that, and until I started supplementing higher I used to relapse at spring - but not for the last two and a half years where my D levels have been on the rise.
It's been the only thing that I have differently.

Excellent news Helen. After
Excellent news Helen.
After over 30 years of intermittent steroids, I have osteoporosis and a history of multiple fractures. Unfortunately I can now add 2 more broken bones to my long list because I've had yet another fall, and fractured both my ulna and radius just above the wrist.
Vit D has been proven to help strengthen our bones, so if you don't want old crumbly bones like I have, please take heed of what Helen's saying.
Having said that, typing is difficult and I'm in a lot of pain, so I won't be around as often for a little while. If needed, send me a PM and I'll be notified that it's here.
breaking up :(
Sorry to hear your news Anne.
The price of steriods and periods of inactivity are really bad news for bones and we have to do our best to try and avoid the 'secondary' effects of MS.

Vit d level
I got all my blood test results today & my vit d is up to 103 so Dr was very happy with that. I am taking 1000 iu a day & she said to stay with that. I get them cheapest from chemist warehouse, healthfood shops dont seem to have the 1000 where chemist warehouse has a few different brands, can even have that dose with calcium if you want it.
my liver has improved, that is because I have decreased the neurofen/brufen I was takeing 3x400mg a day now 1 a day & on a bad day 2, dr was happy with that.
My iron levels were fine to start with but what circulates through the body is still very low - which has bearing on bowel issues apparently.
Sorry to read of your broken bones Anne, hope they heal quickly.

Don't forget to take calcium with the Vit D
Don't forget that we still need to take calcium along with the Vit D, but ensure you don't take too much of it. It helps with the uptake of Vit D.
Also one benefits more from taking calcium with Vit D supplements of a night time rather than morning. I take mine as part of my nightly ritual along with more flaxseed oil. I take all my other supplements in the morning.
I find out my latest results next week. I'm currently taking 2500-3000iu. I take 1000iu with calcium and the rest is just straight Vit D.
Thanks for that Helen! Cant
Thanks for that Helen! Cant wait to get mine tested again in the near future to see how they are!!
Anne, thats not good to hear about your latest fractures
osteoporosis runs in my family, with both my grandmothers having it, and my mother having it too... mums is worse due to steroid use for COPD.... so I am doing all I can to make sure I dont get it..
Hey Karen
A question regarding taking your Vit D at night.... I was taking mine at night, along with my fish oil, and I found it was affecting my sleep... stopped the fish oil, but still had terrible sleep, so now I take them both in the morning with my B complex and multi.... have you had any issues with sleep and vit D?
My thoughts were that maybe the vit D was a stimulant.... not too sure, just know I sleep like a baby now
but have been curious to see whether others are affected, or if I'm just special
Cheers Kristy

Vitamins at night/day
I take all my vitamins in the morning, when I have taken them at night I cant get to sleep & it is worse than usual. I dont know if they are stimulants or not. I take evening primrose oil, fish/omega 3, vit d, cranberry tablets & multivitamin.
I asked dietician who said most people take them in the morning or day so they work then. She didnt have any reasoning for it other than that so I guess it is try & see. Dr said it doesnt matter when you take them but try to take them at the same time (approx).
Re the calcium, I have tried them individual, with the vit d & I cant take them as they upset my stomach with cramps.

Vitamin D can be taken anytime
Hi Kristy,
Vitamin D can be taken at any time of the day, but it's when it's taken combined with Calcium that it should be taken at night-time and with meals for maximum absorption.
I do not notice any problem with sleep taking my Vit D at night compared to taking it during the day. I also haven't seen any references in anything I have read suggesting there is a problem. But I have read plenty about taking the combined supplement at night-time.
I have attached a link here to do with Osteoporosis and calcium, and Vit D. It's quite interesting to read, and also to read that full cream milk contains NO fortified Vit D (the only Vit D is naturally occuring), which once upon a time it did. So I found that quite interesting and wonder whether somehow there's a link to why people are having issues with Vit D these days.

My levels have dropped even with supplementation
Hi all,
Just got my last test results back and my levels are 60 which is quite a decrease from high 70's from my previous one in hospital. I have been supplementing with 2,000iu daily since basically xmas and have been in the sun yet mine has decreased!!
This is the very first time I have shown any level lower then mid 70's, so have no idea why this is happening. I do have a thyroid issue I'm going through at present so not sure if that can somehow affect the levels. Starting from today I'll be taking 3,000iu and see what my next test shows.
If anyone knows if there is a connection between thyroid and Vit D levels decreasing, please let me know!
I'm going to consider changing brands in case it's something to do with the ones I'm taking. Any suggestions of brands??
Vitamin D brands
Hi Karen,
I started with Ostelin which seems to be recommended, however past 10 months have been using D from US.
Brands are:
Now
Healthy Origins
very cheap compared to OZ. I have a few $5.00 off first purchase id numbers, if you are interested PM me. The site I use is iherb.com, has many vitamins and brands. They express the vitamins from US to Brisbane usually in 5 days. I'll see if I can find out any thing in relation to D and thyroid. My levels did go up but then I was taking minimum 5000iu per day.

Vitamin D and thyroid
Hi Karen,
Have dug up a couple of articles for you about Vitamin D and thyroid:
http://www.goodhormonehealth.com/VitaminD.pdf
and
http://vitamins.lovetoknow.com/Vitamin_D_Deficiency_Thyroid
happy reading!
Helen.
Thanks Helen
Hi Helen, thanks for that. I found an error in the first link where the have mixed up Vit D2 & 3. Probably a typo error but one would think with such an article they'd proofread it well.
I had a read of these but they haven't really given me an answer as to why mine is declining. Basically they are saying we need to get in the sun or take supplements in order to maintain the levels because it can cause a problem with absorbtion, but I do both!
So why is mine declining when with extra supplements should be increasing is a mystery to me. But there definitely seems to be a link between the Vit D and this, as in mine is declining. I'm now wondering whether if I wasn't taking the supplements and getting into the sun that I would have shown with even lower levels. It's really got me thinking now.
My problem with the thyroid is my TSH was completely normal but the hospital ran T4 & T3 tests on me because I have a nodule and some lymph nodes adjacent to the thyroid and experiencing a whole range of crazy symptoms and have been since I was in hospital and they're getting worse.
Anyway, the TSH and T3 were normal but the T4 was just higher than the high range which my dr said was odd. She said it should have come back with a problem with the TSH was well. My calcium and Vit D are classed as normal. So why I have this other problem is a mystery!
But it certainly may explain the excessive fatigue (more than usual), hair loss, headaches, eye pain, neck pain, croaky voice and weird burning up feelings without my actual body temp going up yet I feel like I'm on fire.
I'm having everything tested again after the easter period and they are adding on some thyroid antibody tests so I'm going to ask about the connection between Vit D and thyroid, as in is it similar to what we experience with MS, as if it is I may well have to take a lot more Vit D.
I would be interested to know if anyone else has had the same as me; normal TSH & T3 and high T4 and what the result was of that.
Hey Gang
I'm not too sure what my levels are, I'll have to check with my neuro at my next visit, but I take 6,000IU at day along with a calcium supplement.

Vitamin D levels
Hi all
I just got my results for my vitamin D levels and they are on 56 which they said is too low. I am currently taking 1000 iu a day and have been for about 7 weeks but have been told to double it. Will this be enough and how long will it take to get my levels up to a normal level?
Thanks
Carmy
Hi Carmy, I was taking
Hi Carmy,
I was taking 1000-2000iu and measured a level of 81 - in the theoretical normal range, I wanted to get to George Jelinek's recommended minimum for an MSer - which is 150nmols, to do this I imported 5,000 and 10,000 iu tablets from the US. My level is now 140, I took 5,000 iu per day until a month before retesting where I took 10,000 iu. I now take 5,000 iu every day and will be popping the odd 10,000 as it is now coming on to winter and the chance for natural sunlight vitamin D is low. Your GP can prescribe a max dose of Vitamin D. The other option if you don't want to import is that Bioceuticals make a liquid Vitamin D, and you can just add drops into water or juice.
Here is a MS Research position paper on Vitamin D and how to increase levels. I have posted a lot on this topic you can search the old site and this one for previous posts.

Helen....
Hi Helen
Can you notice any difference on the higher levels?
When I remember, I take 6,000 IUs a day, I really should get the levels checked again, see where I'm at, and then remember to take them if need be.

higher levels
Hey Deanna,
I don't 'physically' notice a difference, except that I have not had any relapses for two and three quarter years now - I do feel that the MS is 'quieter' now - hard to explain, but I am doing a lot more exercise and going out at night which is something I didn't do a couple of years ago. I think Jelinek suggests getting levels checked - about now- just as winter is coming on so we know whether to top up over winter, and again at end of winter. The studies show relapses correlate to spring - just after winter when D levels may have been low, and that was definitely what happened to me in the early years.
I'd get your level checked probably every 6 months, you have to take really huge doses to be toxic, D is used by every cell in the body every day, its not easy to get from food, so sunshine and supplementation are the only realistic options.
Helen.
Thanks Helen, that article
Thanks Helen,
that article was very informative. I like the sound of taking the liquid as I really hate swallowing tablets. I'm going to look for a liquid fish oil that I've been told about this weekend so might just try to get the liquid Vit D at the same time.

Hey Carmy
My Vit D level was also 56 n/mol, that was before xmas. I have since been taking 10,000 IU daily, and I am going to go back and get my levels checked as soon as life settles down a bit, so hopefully they have risen a bit.
As for fish oil, the immunologist told me that to have a good anti-inflammatory effect, you need to take at least 10,000 - 12,000 mg daily (I had told him that I was taking 6000).
I seriously need to look into taking the liquid forms, as I currently take 23 vit tablets every morning!!!! But I find the only way to remember to take them is to put them into those pill boxes, I have one that has compartments for 4 daily doses, and has 7 days... so once a week, I dish them all out, then stick it in my bathroom and take them as soon as I wake up.
Cheers Kristy

Hi Kristy, OMG, 23 vit tabs,
Hi Kristy,
OMG, 23 vit tabs, I don't think I could stomach that. I am only taking 12 and am struggling with that. Keep me posted on your levels if they have risen or not taking the high dose. The pill box is a good idea. I keep meaning to get one but keep forgetting. I might put it on my list for this weekend when i go and get the liquids.
Thanks
Carmy
Pill box
Just a note about pill boxes. They are sold at chemists for about $8 but if you go to the $2 shops that what you pay for the same thing! I know what I prefer to pay.
I have actually got 3 now (was for when we went on holidays I had them all organised).
I always fill 2 at a time, serves a couple of purposes -
1-I dont have to try to remember which tablets I am due to take or how many.
2- I dont run out of the prescription (esp) pills as I fill them 2 weeks at a time so know when I need to fill some more scripts, as I fill them if I am down to 1-2 weeks left I get the script out so I can fill it.
What I do is I have a 5 litre tub on wheels that I keep in a cupboard with all my medications & scripts. I have a plastic bag that has the opened boxes/jars of pills which is what I am using to fill pill/dosette boxes. Helps me to keep control of what I need. Also if I have to go to hospital in a hurry can grab that bag so I have some of all my medications with me. This is good esp if it is a weekend as the pharmacy in most hospitals is shut so if they dont them in their medicine store I at least have enough to get me through. There is often 2 or 3 that they dont have & they are one's that control my migraines & they are one's that I need daily.
Hope this helps others. If I am not clear send me question or on here & I will answer it. (having trouble getting thoughts & words right.
Breathing in, breathing out, I return to my own blessed center.

23 oh boy!
Hi Kristy,
I will never complain again, I usually take about 6 tabs in morning and then find I just run out of time to get fish oil in and usually forget. I know they are important too so I have to try and get them in.
I keep all mine in a basket and have found it better if I put the bottle out of the basket until I have had them all. Previously I would get confused as to which ones I had already had, so now I find that better. All of the talk about Vit D levels makes me want to get mine checked soon too and I must ask about Vit. B as well, I currently take multivitamins and am never sure if I could take both.I will check tomorrow.
Cheers,

Vitamin D
I have just got my levels back and they are 60. Doc recommended Ostelin, but are there cheaper alternatives??
Cheaper alternatives
Hi Carieanne,
Yes, but you'll have to buy them from the US. The website I use is
iherb.com, and you can buy them ranging from about 400iu to 10,000 iu. I started with the Now brand 5000 iu $8.80 for 120. Postage is around $4.00 if you don't want express - it will take around 2 weeks, express costs around $16.00. it will be here in 5 days. I have a code that can get you $5.00 off your first order if you PM me. And no I don't work for them, but I do get about 2% discount on my orders if I refer people. This is a good site for all vitamins as it carries lots of different brands at much cheaper prices, just keep an eye on the Aussie dollar if you are going to order.
Other than that Chemist Wharehouse usually has the cheapest prices on Vitamin D and Ostelin is a good brand, I used them, but the dosages are only 1000iu max, and I needed a higher dose, thats why I was forced to go overseas.
Helen.
Cheap D
I get my Vit D tablets from Golden Glow - price is $18.95 for 180 x 1000iu tablets. Not as cheap as the US brand clearly but is very quick to arrive. I get several types of vitamins at the same time as they are cheaper the more you buy and if you buy over $100 in an order there is no delivery charge.
Cheers,
Jodi.
