If you've been prescribed Neurontin/Gabapentin for nerve pain you might like to read the following article:

Very interesting

Thanks for posting this Anne. I am interested as I suffer from significant sensory symptoms and have just recently been testing Gapapentin to see if it will help me. I am currently on Tegretol and have been for many years. By not taking it and taking Gabapentin instead (but quite a low dose), I have discovered that it is not really effective for me. It may be at higher levels but I am probably better off just taking a little more Tegretol. It's a fine line with the dosage of these sort of drugs between having pain and sensory symptoms or having dopiness caused by the drugs. Just not sure exactly what the best course of action is as I have tried acupuncture and it does stuff-all for me. Honestly I felt absolutely disgusting when I stopped the Tegretol to try the Gabapentin. It was definitely not effective at the level I was taking, that's for sure.

I certainly think that it is very worthwhile to find this out so I can be fully informed and think about another course of action.

Cheers,
Jodi.

I was prescribed this for

I was prescribed this for nerve pain and sensory disturbances as well, but only lasted about 10 days on it as I couldn't handle the side-effects. I went back on the Epilium, as I could handle those side-effects.

Interesting read though.....

Me too

I was given it in large doses from the Pain Management Program in Brisbane, I could not handle the large daily dose - 900gm, decreasing and then recycling - I put on weight really quickly and my ankles swelled - lasted about a month on that dose and then spent about a year on the 100mg 3 times per day didn't do much. I still have a few old large strength ones left take them to sort of make me sleep, when the supply runs out I won't be getting anymore.

However there are a couple of issues here, gabapentin/neurontin being prescribed for MS is being done on an 'off label' basis, the drug is primarily prescribed for epilepsy....so I don't know how much valid research has been done for its prescription in MS.
Sometimes 'off label' drugs do help - so it is damned if you do and damned if you don't. I wouldn't want to prohibit it if it worked for some people.

I had very bad reactions

I was on this for about a week a few years ago and a few of you may recall I've commented on how bad this drug was for me a number of times when people have asked about it's side effects!

I instantly had terrible burning pain in my left arm and into the jaw. Also felt like my jaw had been hit really hard. That was the first thing. Then I had altered thought patterns and out of body experience that scare the crap out of me!! It also made my neuralgia worse.

I was only on a low dose to start with because of sensitivities. I'd hate to think what I really high dose would have done to me.

I stick to acupuncture as it works for me!! Just like drugs, acupuncture seems to well for some, and I'm lucky enough that it works extremely well for me!

Nasy stuff

The dr who admitted me, a stroke dr, had me on gabapentin in the hospital and then laughed with the other silly cow dr (who didn't like me cos i swore at her) that they didn't really expect it to work for my neuralgia. i found the side effects pretty horrible and although the brain pain returned, i felt a lot better once it was out of my system.
